MACDeLand June Update
It’s June and JAMFest is back for the second year. The MACDeLand Committee of the DeLand Area Chamber of Commerce is celebrating arts and culture in West Volusia throughout the month of June. Dance and sing with us on West Indiana Avenue, Saturday June 13 when we bring you Quanita’s Latin Dance, 6-7 pm and Central Florida Has Talent, a musical contest highlighting the best of area vocalists, 7-9 pm. The Enzian Theatre, Maitland, and Stetson University present the documentary film Under African Skies, the extraordinary story of the making of Paul Simon’s Graceland, Friday, June 19, 8 pm, outdoors on the Stetson Lawn next to the Carlton Student Building. Bring chairs or blankets. Free.
The African American Museum of the Arts stages its annual Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 20, 11- 5 pm, Thin Man Watts Amphitheatre. Arts, crafts, food, live music and entertainment. Free.
The Athens Theater has a full schedule of exciting events: The Cog is Dead a concert on June 6 at 7 pm; Heritage, an original dance performance by the Center for Contemporary Dance, Friday, June 12, 7:30 pm. Go back in time at the Celebration of Olde Florida at the Pioneer Settlement, Barberville, June 13, 10-4pm. Arts, crafts, food, demonstrations, quilt show. Free. Pioneersettlement.org. Spoken Word is trending now and you can enjoy it Sunday June 14, 1-4 pm at Café DaVinci when we open the mic to local and regional poets. Come perform or come to listen and learn. Free. The Sister Cities Association invites you to join them for Photography and Poetry, June 19, 5-7:30 pm at the Hampton Inn and Suites, DeLand. Images from Bayonne, France, Campeche, Mexico and Diamantina, Brazil will be on view through June 27. Recitations in English and French, Free. And you will want to be there when we welcome Tamika “Georgia Me” Harper, a nationally celebrated spoken word artist and friends to DeLand for her performance, June 20, 7 pm at Byte Bistro Upstairs. $10 at the door.
The Museum of Art – DeLand and the Gillespie Museum, Stetson, have a full month of exhibitions and activities.
